How to Prevent Flea Infestation

It is difficult to keep the fleas at bay throughout the entire summer and fall and can become expensive if you have to continuously purchase sprays and powders for control. Instructions

    • 1

You can purchase eucalyptus leaves at any craft store, at many discount stores, and sometimes even at health food, organic and drugstores. Fleas are repelled by the smell of the leaves. They are safe for your children, your pets, and the environment. Spread the eucalyptus leaves around your yard and along your fence.

    • 2

You can boil the eucalyptus leaves in water and after letting it cool add the water to your pet's bath as a rinse to help repel any fleas that may be tempted to jump on your pet.

    • 3

Purchase one or more bags of cedar chips. You can find cedar chips at most stores that sell pet bedding for rodents and rabbits. Some communities keep piles of cedar chips from Christmas trees that were run through city or county chippers after the holidays each years and are free.

    • 4

Spread the cedar chips all around the perimeters of your fence or yard. This will help keep fleas from crossing into your yard from a neighbor's yard.

    • 5

If you keep your pets enclosed in a pen you can purchase tansy, which is a herb. Plant the tansy around your pet's pen or your yard if you'd like. Spread the tansy leaves around your pet's pen or your yard. The tansy will also protect your children from getting bitten by fleas. It is safe for both pets and humans. You may have to purchase the tansy plants from a garden nursery or any place that sells plants and herbs.

To prevent fleas on your carpet sprinkle borax on the carpet, wait an hour and vacuum it up. Borax can also be sprinkled along your fence or the boundaries of your yard.
