Learning to draw Japanese animation can be easy for some because of a natural drawing talent, but a little difficult for others who do not possess a natural drawing talent. But anyone can learn how to draw Japanese-style animation--or "anime"--with the following tips and suggestions.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Drawing paper
  • Ruler
  • Crayon pencils
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint
  • Digital coloring program
  • Protractor
  1. Step 1

Search the Internet for information about anime clubs and online drawing classes. There are many online websites, classes, clubs and other opportunities that can be very instrumental to an artist in regards to learning how to draw Japanese anime. Some of them also encourage and help artists who desire to create their own comic books (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Take classes at an art school. Taking classes will help you to understand the techniques, design and styles of Japanese animation. It is also good to have an instructor to show you the proper way of drawing Japanese animation. Aside from taking a class, you may also be able to work with someone who has knowledge and skill specifically in drawing Japanese animation.

  3. Step 3

Watch and study Japanese TV programs. Study and compare the different types of styles of the anime characters. Study the different facial expressions, structure of the character, movement of the character and the lighting in the program.

  4. Step 4

Watch anime videos. Pause the program, if you can, when you find a character that interest you and practice drawing the character.

  5. Step 5

Go to the library or purchase Japanese anime instructional drawing books. These books are very helpful in learning the art styles and drawing techniques for Japanese animation. The key to learning to draw Japanese animation is to stay focused and committed while you are learning (see Resources below).
