Part of observing Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, is taking the day off work. Although some companies close for the Jewish holy days, most do not.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thank-you Notes
  • Calendars

    Preparation

  1. Step 1

When you start a new job, ask about the company policy on taking time off for the Jewish holidays.

  2. Getting the Day Off

  3. Step 1

Ask your human resources department about the company's policy on taking time off work for religious holidays.

  4. Step 2

Plan ahead for any time-sensitive projects or events that will need to be done on the day you are out. Ask a co-worker to cover for you on anything that cannot be postponed to a different day, promising to do the same the next time he or she needs a day off.

  5. Step 3

Wait for a quiet moment and ask your supervisor if he or she has a few minutes.

  6. Step 4

Explain that Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year and that part of observing this important Jewish holiday is to attend services at synagogue. Tell your supervisor that you have already made arrangements for a co-worker to cover for you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to give as much notice as possible so that your co-workers can hire a temp or find someone to fill in for you if necessary.
  • If a co-worker is inconvenienced by your absence, a thank-you note is always a welcome gesture.
