Owning a computer with a printer can get expensive, especially if you print a great deal. Ink cartridges usually cost an average of $25-$30 to replace. In an effort to cut down on the cost of replacing ink cartridges, consumers are turning to refill kits instead of replacing the entire cartridges. Refill kits are relatively inexpensive, are simple to use, and can save you money.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ink refill kit compatible with an HP 45 Ink Cartridge
  • Gloves
  • Paper Towels
  • Newspaper
  1. Step 1

Prepare your area for easy clean up. Place paper towels or an old newspaper on your work surface area. Next, remove the disposable gloves that came with the ink refill kit. Place a glove on each hand. This will help to prevent ink staining your hands during the refill and cleanup process.

  2. Step 2

Turn the ink cartridge over and remove the plug or black tape covering the refill hole. This is located on the bottom of the ink cartridge. Once this is removed you should see a ball bearing covering the refill hole. Take the end of the syringe, without the needle, insert into the refill hole and gently push the ball bearing into the cartridge.

  3. Step 3

Assemble the syringe. Take the needle that came in the ink refill kit and connect this firmly to the small opening on top of the syringe. Remove the cap from the black and press the syringe into the ink pulling the plunger back to draw ink into the syringe. Fill plunger 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full.

  4. Step 4

Inject ink into the refill hole. Be careful not to puncture the ink bag in the cartridge. If this is damaged, you will need to purchase a new cartridge. Continue filling until bubbles appear at the fill hole.

  5. Step 5

Remove the syringe and pick up a plug that came with the kit. Squeeze the sides of the cartridge gently and insert the plug while squeezing. This creates a pressure inside the cartridge that prevents it from leaking.

  6. Step 6

Wipe excess ink of the cartridge. Turn upright an allow to sit for 1-2 minutes. If no leaking has occurred, replace cartridge in printer and print a test page. You may need to print 1-2 pages before the cartridge prints properly. If cartridge is leaking, you may need to remove the plug and repeat step 5.

Tips & Warnings
  • After refilling a cartridge, the computer may still send you a message saying the ink level is low. This is because ink levels are determined based on the amount of printing that has been done. If you get this message and your your pages are printing normal, ignore it until you notice that the printer is running out of ink.
