  1. Step 1

Head out to Maymont Park. The park boasts Japanese and Italian gardens within its beautiful 100 acres, along with a nature center and waterfall. It's the perfect backdrop for your run along the sprawling nature trails. If you want to run with your children, you can cap off your exercise afterwards by visiting the park's great animal farm! The address is: 2201 Shields Lake Drive, Richmond, VA. Phone: (804) 358-7166.

  2. Step 2

Join a club! Spending some time in Richmond and not just passing through? Consider joining the Richmond Road Runners Club, which hosts regular runs and races in local parks and sports stadiums throughout the year. Visit their site at the link below in the Resources section.

  3. Step 3

Lace up your shoes and go for a run in James River Park. It's an enormous 550-acre park at Hillcrest Road and Riverside Drive, that stretches four miles across the scenic James River to the I-95 bridge. The trails are just as scenic, and you won't be the only one that thinks so. This is the park that hosts the X-Terra Off-Road Triathlon. Call (804) 646-8911 for more information.

  4. Step 4

Run around 3 Lakes Park located on 400 Sausiluta Drive in Richmond. It has running trails that will take you past 3 scenic lakes. You will be able to exercise in peace and surrounded in tranquility. Phone the park's offices at (804) 261-8230.

  5. Step 5

Get out to a city park if nature is not your thing. Chimborazo City Park is located within a more manageable 30 acres and has great view of the southern part of the city. Several trails descend to walking paths on hills of various heights, that will allow you to tailor your run from beginner level to advanced. Enter the park on East Broad Street near 32nd St.

Tips & Warnings
  • Run during the daylight hours.
  • When possible, call ahead to make sure of the park's hours and if there is any construction work happening or things that would otherwise deter you.
  • To protect yourself against potential predators always carry a cell phone with you if running alone or -- better yet -- go with a buddy.
