How to Enjoy a Visit to Riga, Latvia
Riga is the capital of Latvia, a country along Baltic Sea in north-eastern Europe. While not a major tourist destination, Riga is has a quaint "old town" with narrow cobblestone streets, elegant squares, and pleasant sidewalk cafes. Since Latvia became independent in 1991, the city has modernized itself significantly, while at the same time, no efforts have been spared to restore many of its older landmarks. Latvian and Russian are commonly spoken in Riga, though English speakers will have little trouble finding someone that understands them in the center of the town.

Explore the city by foot. Walking is by far the best way to enjoy the center of Riga, and indeed a number of streets in the old town are blocked off from vehicular traffic entirely. You may want to bring a map with you, however, as it is easy to get lost in the winding maze of streets. A stroll along the wide Daugava River is also very pleasant.

Dine in some of the city's better restaurants, which include Charlston, Nostagia, and Put Veijni. If you get a sudden craving for pizza, don't miss Pizza Lulu, which is startlingly good. Also don't forget to sample some Latvian beers. They are excellent.

Go to the City Market, if you want to get a more gritty feel for life in the city, or if you are simply looking for a bargain on just about anything.
