Buy or obtain a permit for beaver trapping, depending on your state laws. Check with your state department of natural resources or similar agency to determine your state's rules. You want to adhere to your state's laws before you buy your trap.

Determine how large the beaver is that you will be trapping and determine how many beavers you will need to trap. Beaver traps come in a variety of sizes. Baby beaver traps come in 20-inch varieties, while adult beaver traps can be 39 inches or larger.

    • 3

Decide whether you want a cage-like beaver trap or a flat beaver trap that snaps up on the animal. Cage beaver traps operate by you placing lure oil or beaver scent in the cage and luring the animal into the cage. They cannot escape from the cage. Flat beaver straps lie flat on land or in water. When a beaver walks on the cage, the trap snaps up and traps the beaver.

Get a trap with the quietest mechanism. Even though the wire cage won’t hurt the beaver, it will still scare it pretty badly. If you get a trap with a quiet mechanism, the beaver won't be as scared and may be less likely to cause damage to itself and your cage.

Purchase the beaver trap from your local animal control government office, a sporting goods store or from an online website like "Dunn Fish Farm."
