Your belt is a very important part of your gi, it shows off your status in your dojo as well as your relative skill level in your martial art. Putting one of these on correctly is important for many reasons. There is a universal way to tie your karate belt, however, every martial arts studio does this a little bit differently. It might be important to ask your sensei how your specific dojo ties their belt.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold up the belt in the middle. Check to make sure both sides of the belt are even in length with the tag on the right side facing out. If the belt does not have a tag, make sure that the seam is facing out.

  2. Step 2

Place the middle of the belt right below your belly button.

  3. Step 3

Wrap the ends of the belt around your back to the front, tucking the left side underneath itself as you bring your hand forward. The right side of the belt should sit on top of the lower layer of belt.

  4. Step 4

Loop the right hand side of the belt under the two layers of belt in the front, and bring it back up through the top. This will leave you with the two ends hanging in front, both ends coming from behind the front knot. Pull tight and make sure that both ends have the same length. If they do not, start over from step 1.

  5. Step 5

Take the left end of the belt over the right and pull into the front knot.
