How to Greet Others in Arabic

Whether you are traveling to Arabic-speaking countries or simply live in a community with people who speak Arabic, learning how to greet someone in their own language can demonstrate friendliness and respect. There are several common greetings in Arabic that are simple to learn. With a little practice, you will be prepared to greet Arabic speakers comfortably.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn some basic greeting words. The most common greeting is "As-salaam alaykum," which means "Hello, peace upon you." The standard response to this greeting is "Alaykum as-salaam," which means "Hello, peace upon you too." Other greetings include "Marhaban" or "Ahlan," which mean "Hello" and "Welcome." "Kayf haluk" means "How are you?" Visitors may greet someone and wait for a reply; no reply is a signal that the visitor is unwelcome.

    • 2

Stand when being introduced to someone. Handshakes are a common way to greet people among the same gender, but do not offer to shake hands with a member of the opposite sex unless the other person initiates the contact.

    • 3

When conversing, keep a distance of about two feet (an arm's length). Avoid touching people, even in a gesture of friendliness. Standing with your hands behind your back is preferable to crossing your arms or placing your hands on your hips. Do not sit in any way that would show the sole of your foot, as that is considered insulting. If entering a home or mosque, remove your shoes.

Tips & Warnings

  • If possible, find someone who speaks Arabic to help you with pronunciation. Online videos can also be a helpful way to learn how the language sounds.
