Many dog owners become concerned when their dog experiences vomiting or diarrhea. If it occurs occasionally, with no other symptoms, it may be of no concern. But if your dog has a regular problem, you should make an appointment with your vet. There are measures you can take to protect your dog; here’s how to prevent gastroenteritis in a pet.

From Quick Guide: Gastroenteritis Guide
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Gastroenteritis can be caused by your dog eating food or other materials he shouldn’t. Since canines are very curious by nature, it’s important to keep toxic substances like anti-freeze, chocolate and raisins out of their reach.

  2. Step 2

If you start serving your dog a different food, monitor his behavior closely. Some dogs have dietary intolerance that can cause problems. If you notice a change in the dog, try switching back to the previous food and see if the situation rights itself.

  3. Step 3

If your dog suffers frequent vomiting or diarrhea (twice or more monthly), contact your vet. Ask her to check for abdominal and/or metabolic disorders.

  4. Step 4

Keep your dog's vaccinations up to date. Gastroenteritis can be caused by fungal, parasitic and bacterial infections. Also, ask your vet about starting your pet on a parasite-prevention medication.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some dogs are more prone to health issues. A vet will typically tell you if your breed is more susceptible than others to gastroenteritis.
