Become a Firefighter in North Carolina

Firefighters risk their lives on a daily basis fighting fires. To many, this is not just a job but a dream that they have had since they were children. They worked hard to obtain their dream by actively researching, training and applying themselves 100 percent to fulfill an employment position. Continue reading below if you think you can handle becoming a North Carolina firefighter.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download an employment application from the human resources department or obtain one in person or via email. Submit the application before the closing date of the advertised position.

  2. Step 2

Take the written exam, which covers English comprehension. North Carolina requires applicants to receive a grade of 70 percent to apply.

  3. Step 3

Enroll in the Job Related Physical Ability Test (JRPAT). Before the day of the test, submit all required paper work, including a signed medical release form.

  4. Step 4

Provide a criminal history and driving records copy for the past 5 years. Do not make any marks on them, or they will then be “unofficial."

  5. Step 5

Attend a structured interview before the panel, which may include different fire department personnel as well as the human resources staff. The fire chief may also schedule another interview if he feels the need for it.

  6. Step 6

Go to the city’s organization that performs background checks if the city is considering hiring you for employment. They will tell you the location if you are chosen. They will also cover the cost.

  7. Step 7

Check your mail on a daily basis. The city will mail out a conditional offer of employment that outlines the first year’s expectations.

  8. Step 8

Schedule a drug test within 24 hours of receiving the conditional offer of employment. Passing is a must, and applicants will not be hired if they fail.

  9. Step 9

Schedule a medical screening with the department’s physician or another doctor that provides the screening according to NFPA1001 regulations. The department physician will need to provide a signature of compliance.
