How to Use FreeCycle

For anyone interested in keeping usable items out of landfills or those on a tight budget, Freecycle is a great resource. Freecycle is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building a community of people who pass on usable items they no longer need or want, instead of dumping them in a landfill.

Instructions

    • 1

Join Yahoo Groups and do a search for Freecycle and your city and state. Alternately, you can search from the official Freecycle website (see Resources).

    • 2

When you clean out closets, do spring cleaning or just plain want to redecorate, save any usable items you'd like to throw out. Post them to your local Freecycle list. Sometimes it helps to separate items into logical groups. One example is all outgrown children's clothes in one group and all household decorations in another group.

    • 3

When you are in the market for an item, post a "Wanted" message to the list. Include the item you want, and any specific requirements you have. It's helpful to state specifically if you're willing to do any repair work on the item.

    • 4

Use basic safety precautions when giving or receiving an item. Don't give out your address or phone number to people with whom you are unfamiliar.

    • 5

Suggest meeting to exchange the item at a mutually convenient, public location during daylight hours. For example, choose a grocery store parking lot during your lunch hour.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rules vary from group to group, so be sure to read you group's posting rules.

  • Some groups limit the number of "Wanted" posts you can list per month.

  • There is no limit to the number of "Offers" you can post.

  • Show up to pick up your item promptly. Members talk to each other and not showing up is a quick way to ensure you don't receive another item.

  • Freecycle is not a trading site. If you're looking to trade items, look elsewhere.

  • Be honest about the condition of the items you post as "Offers."
