Expect to see some wildlife, including alligators, deer and marsh birds when you go riding at the equestrian center at Middleton Place. They offer one-hour trail rides for all skill levels and provide both instruction and headgear. You’ll ride on trails that meander through woodlands and rice fields. Group or private lessons are available and it also boards horses. Foxhunting is enjoyed here and is accompanied by breakfasts and tailgate parties following the hunt. A Hunt Ball is held during hunting season along with several other functions.

Register your children for day camp during the summer at M&M Farms. It’s less than half an hour from downtown Charleston and it offers extended hours for working parents. In addition to riding daily, your child will be responsible for grooming and tacking up her mount. Crafts and other activities are also offered at the day camps. Group and individual horseback riding lessons and show coaching are available. M&M Farms offers boarding facilities including full care, concierge care and pasture boarding.

Take advantage of a stable jumping course when you ride at Stono River Stable at Johns Island. This is a 300-acre working horse farm with a riding academy only seven miles from Charleston. It features four riding rings, a cross country event course with 60-plus jumps for every training level, and miles of riding trails. Group and private lessons are offered or you can bring your own horse and school the course for a fee. It’s also possible to lease a horse exclusively. A summer camp is available. It offers boarding facilities and has a selection of horses for sale. A dressage area, pastures and paddocks, and barns are also on the property.

Take private or group riding lessons and/or participate in a variety of year-round camps at the Tuxbury Farm Equestrian Center in Wando. Although it has no private riding trails, its location offers access to the Francis Marion National Forest. There are also neighborhood trails nearby. Boarding facilities are available with a variety of services provided. It has several annual events, including horse shows.
