Make a Wheat Heating Pad

If you or someone you love suffers from aches and pains on a regular basis, or if you simply deal with occasional soreness, you might look for non-medicinal ways to find relief. This heating pad is easy to make, even if you don't have superior sewing skills, and you can even make it with organic materials, if you wish!

Things You'll Need

  • Thick cotton material, double the size you want your heating pad (18" is a good size)
  • 4 cups whole or cracked wheat (or more, or less as desired)
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Use the scissors to cut the fabric into a square or rectangular shape. Fold the material in half with the front of the material inside, so that your fabric is inside-out.

    • 2

Stitch the two longer sides closed, leaving the shorter, end side unstitched. Make sure you use a very small, close stitch or go over the stitching again so that the wheat won't fall through any small holes in the seam of the pillow.

    • 3

Sew up all but a small spot of the last side, again making certain that the stitching won't allow any of the wheat to fall out.

    • 4

Turn the fabric right side out by pulling it through the unstitched hole. Pull the corners out as well as you can.

    • 5

Fill the heating with wheat through the remaining hole. Fill it so that it is full but not puffy like a pillow. Sew up the remaining hole. To use the heating pad, place it in the microwave and heat for one to two minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use flax seed instead of wheat.

  • Sprinkle with a few drops of essential oil before placing in the microwave for an aromatic treat!

  • Cotton is the best fabric to use, as it "breathes" better and cleans easily. However, if you have other fabric on hand and wish to use it, you can.
