How to Become a Chief Firefighter
Fire Chief is the highest position that you can earn as a firefighter. To get to this position, you will need to develop your professional expertise, put in many years of service and dedicate your life to being the best of the best. While it is difficult to become a chief firefighter, it is not impossible. All you have to do is put your nose to the grindstone and complete the tasks that will get you there; here's how.

Gain experience as a volunteer or paid firefighter. There are many steps along the way to becoming a chief firefighter. You will start out as a probationary firefighter. The next steps up are engineer, lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, assistant chief, deputy chief and finally chief firefighter. As you can see, becoming a chief firefighter is going to take a decade or longer.

Complete extra professional training and education. In order to move your way up in the ranks in a fire district you will need to learn about advanced fire fighting equipment, emergency management technology, public speaking, public relations, budget management, budget procedures, writing and general management. In order to advance beyond the position of battalion chief, you will also need to complete your Bachelor’s degree in a public administration or fire science program.

Meet all other requirements for becoming a chief firefighter. The requirements vary by district and state, but most districts require written exams and skill tests, as well as specific levels of seniority.
