Step 1
Graduate from high school or obtain a GED (General Education Development) test. This may seem like a minor qualification, but in Arizona it is mandatory.

Step 2
Take the Arizona’s drivers license test and pass with flying colors. You may be required to drive the fire truck.

Step 3
Join a gym that will allow you to perform various workouts including cardio, strength and aerobics. All three forms of workouts will enable you to pass the physical tests that will be given at a future date.

Step 4
Pass the physical agility test, a physical examination, a written test and practical exam. This part will require some time on your part, so be sure to set plenty aside from your busy schedule.

Step 5
Obtain the Arizona State Firefighter I and II certifications (see Resources below).

Obtain the Arizona State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification (see Resources below).

Enroll in a First Responder Operations course to obtain your FRO certification (see Resources below).

Be good! Arizona requires a background check and the applicants must pass in order to even qualify for an oral board interview.

Step 9
Apply for open positions by calling local fire stations for vacancies. If they like you, they will schedule an oral board interview.
