How to Remove Rust From Cast Iron
So many beautiful items are made of cast-iron. As beautiful and durable as cast-iron is, it is also very likely to rust. You may have a cast-iron stove or decorative piece or cast-iron skillet that has been passed down from generation to generation. The best way to remove rust from your cast-iron skillet or any other cast-iron piece is with a little old-fashioned elbow grease and some common household products.

1
Start with a potato and slice it in half.
-
2
Sprinkle the top of the potato with Barkeeper's Friend. Barkeeper's Friend is a product that can be easily found in most grocery stores or drug stores. If you are not able to locate it, any scouring powder will work.

3
Scrub the area that is covered in rust with the potato. Periodically check the bottom of the potato. When it seems to have turned a grayish or blackish color, you will want to cut the potato to expose a fresh surface. Coat once again with Barkeeper's Friend and continue scrubbing.

4
Once you are done scrubbing, rinse and dry thoroughly.
-
5
Coat the entire surface, front and back, with a thin layer of vegetable oil. This will begin to re-season your pan and protect it from rusting.
