Many horse owners will have a rasp around, for touch ups in between routine hoof care visits. However, if the rasp is not used on a routine basis, it will begin to rust. This segement will detail how to keep your rasp and nippers rust free and ready to use.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rasp
  • Nippers (Optional)
  • WD-40
  • Old, soft cotton towels
  1. Step 1

The first thing to do is make sure the teeth on the rasp are as clean as possible. You can use either the brush on the back of a hoof pick, or a wire brush to scrub between the teeth.

  2. Step 2
    SavEdge Rasp, ready for WD-40

Apply a light coat of WD-40 to both sides of the rasp. This will prevent the steel from rusting.

  3. Step 3

Wrap rasp in the cotton towel, and store on a shelf in your tack room.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you are ready to use your rasp, you can gently wipe off any excess WD-40 with the same cotton towel.
  • Reapply as needed.
  • This can also be done with hoof knives and hoof nippers.
  • Rasps are notoriously sharp- use caution with a brand new one so that you do not cut your fingers!
