How to Become a Personal Trainer in Canada

How to Become a Personal Trainer in Canada thumbnail
Personal trainers are in demand in Canada.

With personal training becoming one of the fastest growing jobs in Canada, it's no wonder that someone would look at joining this rewarding field. Personal trainers have many opportunities to work in gyms, fitness centers, hospitals, physical therapist offices and for sports teams, helping people achieve their goals and become happier and healthier.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet with a personal trainer, and ask what the field is like. A trainer in the field will be able to give you firsthand advice on salaries, job atmosphere and responsibilities and training.

    • 2

Get a degree in training and get certified if you want to work in a hospital and other facility outside of a gym or fitness center (see Resources).

    • 3

Get insurance. If you get certified, the company you were certified through probably offers insurance or can give you information on how to get insurance.

    • 4

Apply everywhere that you would like to work at (plus a few backup choices). Being willing to move may help you, especially if you live in a small town.

    • 5

Keep up your training through continuing education classes.

Tips & Warnings

  • While in school, see if you can get a job leading fitness classes at a local health club to get your foot in the door.

  • Treat your interviews just as you would a professional interview for any other company. Dress to impress, be polite and show off your interpersonal skills to your potential employer. Personal training requires direct contact with clients, meaning they are looking for more than skills and muscles.
