      Set a proper table. When serving a meal, details matter. Take the time to set a table properly and make a big difference in the environment of the meal. Cover your table with an attractive, tablecloth and place a placemat at each place setting. Assemble each place setting with clean chinaware and utensils.

      Wash and dry all serving pieces to a spotless finish. Make sure each piece is spotless and free of dust.

      Plan the timing of the foods. Prepare each dish according to a detailed schedule in order to ensure each is ready to serve at an appropriate time. Avoid having to wait for an item to finish cooking or properly chill, as this will cause a feeling of discontinuity in the overall serving of the meal.

      Place the meal in serving dishes at the center of the table. Invite your guests to be seated.

      Position yourself at the head of the table. Allow guests to take their own portion from each serving dish. Be attentive to the needs of each guest throughout the meal. Refill and replenish as needed.

  • The dinner plate goes in the center. Forks to the left of the dinner plate. Knives on the right side of the dinner plate. Spoons to the right of the knives. If you are serving salad, the salad plate should be placed to the left of the plate, above the forks. Place the drinking glass to the right of the plate, above the knife and spoon. Lay a clean napkin in the center of each plate.
