If you cook with a wok over time it may get rusty. Normally you should take great care when cleaning a wok not to wash away the seasoning you have worked hard to build up on the wok's surface. If the rust stain is particularly bad, however, it may be time to remove the rust from your wok and re-season it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

As much as you might hate to use steel wool on your well seasoned wok, it is a must for removing the rust that has accumulated. Start the cleaning process by rinsing out the wok.

  2. Step 2

Scrub the rusted areas with steel wool. This will remove some of the patina that has built up so you will need to re-season the wok once you are done.

  3. Step 3

Clean the wok with soap and water. If there is still rust you will need to give it one more scrub with steel wool.

  4. Step 4

Rinse the wok one more time. Dry the wok inside and out with a towel.

  5. Step 5

Once the wok is dry, coat the wok with a thin layer of oil. This will prevent the wok from rusting any further.

Tips & Warnings
  • After cleaning the wok, make sure to re-season it.
  • Never wash a wok in the dishwasher.
