3. Look beyond the high street chains and stores. Many are surprised at the variety and quality of items they can find in pound stores and discount shops. Stores like Poundland and Pound Stretcher offer several quality items for a very low price. Wilkinsons and TK Max also offer good quality household goods at a fraction of the cost.

4. Adopt a do it yourself attitude. Ask you local council about an allotmet (ground for gardening). You can rent these for approximately 20 pound per year. Most grow their own fruit and vegetables. While it is a lot of work in the initial stages, it will save a fortune on groceries.

5. Sign up for the supermarket points schemes. Sainbury's Nectar Cards and Tesco's Club point all give you points or credits based on the amount you spend. These can be redeemed in the store at any time for shopping or cash. They take a while to accumulate but before you know it you have a week's worth of groceries courtesy of the store.
