Step 1
Go to the American Council on Exercise (ACE) website (see Resources).

Click on the “Personal Trainer” option and read through the Personal Trainer Certification introduction screen. The ACE certification is respected industry-wide, and those with the certification are ensured to have access to the most up-to-date information.

Verify that you meet the minimum requirements to become an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer. You must be at least 18 years of age and have a current CPR certification.

Click on the “Professional Benefits” link to read through the benefits that will be available to you as an ACE-Certified Personal Trainer. After reading through this section, click on the “Get ACE Certified” link at the top. Select “Personal Trainer Certification.”

Click the “Get Started” button located in the right-side menu. Fill out the questionnaire to determine which study method is best for you. Click on the “Continue” button after answering the questions.

Read through the recommendations, and make any changes to what is recommended based on your study experience. You will need to purchase one of the ACE Personal Trainer Study Guides, but you may also choose to purchase practice tests and an exam review course. After selecting your products, click on “Update Shopping Cart,” and then complete your purchase.

Start your exam preparation when you receive your study materials. After you complete your study guide and your practice tests, you will need to schedule your exam.

Step 8
Schedule your exam by visiting the ACE Fitness Certification Exams website. Enter your zip code to find a Computer-Based Test (CBT) or traditional pencil/paper exam in your area. Proceed through the examination registration process.

Pass your exam to become an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer.
