Garland is a staple for most Christmas trees. It comes in all types, shapes, and sizes. You can use tinsel for a garland, strings of beads and even strands of ribbon. The garland is usually put on the same way by most people and it is not that hard to do. Just follow a few simple steps and you will have a gorgeous tree decorating your house for the holiday season.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Set up the tree. Pick a great spot. Corners usually look great or in front of a window that faces your street. Make sure your tree is fitted properly in the tree stand so it doesn't fall over.

  2. Step 2

Add lights to the Christmas tree before you add the garland. Don't add the ornaments yet though, as they are best hung afterwards. You can even choose to hang some of the ornaments from the garland. The only thing you have to do first is the lights so they don't get tangled in all the other tree dressings.

  3. Step 3

Choose what type of garland will go well with the decorations in the room your tree is located. It is fun if you can get it all to match. You don't have to use the standard tinsel garland as there are now many acceptable forms of garland. Large ribbon and beads are great alternatives.

  4. Step 4

Unravel the strand of garland and begin at the top of the tree, just under the spot that will hold your angel or star. The key to wrapping garland around your tree is to go in a downward sloping pattern. Don't make your garland go around in a circle parallel to the floor or you will have to keep cutting pieces of it. Going in a downward slope will allow you to use one simple long strand from top to bottom.

  5. Step 5

Pull your tree out from the wall so you can continue to walk around it with the one strand of garland. If you have a friend to help you can just pass the garland to each other while one person stands on one side and the other person stands on the other side.

  6. Step 6

Cut the garland at the bottom. When you get to the bottom of your tree you can cut off any excess garland that you may have. Make sure you cut it in the back of the tree where no one will see the end of it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use two different colors of garland and twirl them together before wrapping them around the tree.
  • Place the garland towards the edge of the branches and not tucked inside the branches.
  • Use excess garland to decorate ceiling fans, which aren't usually used in the winter.
