How to Execute a Turn in Tap Dancing

There are four basic turns in tap dancing. Put on your tap shoes and get started learning these steps.

  • Tap shoes

    The Various Turns

  1. Step 1

    Pivot on your right foot, making a complete turn to the right, moving forward. This is the right inside turn.

  2. Step 2

    Pivot on your left foot, doing a complete turn to the right in a backward movement to execute a right outside turn.

  3. Step 3

    Pivot on your left foot, moving in a complete circle to the left in a forward movement to do a left inside turn.

  4. Step 4

    Pivot on your right foot, executing a complete turn to the left in a backward movement to do a left outside turn.

Tips & Warnings
  • Executing turns successfully requires balance, which comes with time and practice. Practice in front of a mirror, if possible. Extend your arms out to the sides to help you maintain your balance.
  • Don’t tap dance on a slippery floor. Slick floors and tap shoes are not a good mix.
