How to Ask a Guy to Winter Formal

The winter formal is a big deal in most high schools. Girls spend weeks shopping for the perfect dress and finding the right date. If you know who you want to go with, you should take the initiative and ask him yourself. This experience might be a little scary and you may feel intimidated, but it doesn’t have to be hard!

Instructions

1. Pick your partner carefully. You may be tempted to ask out someone from a different social group or someone that you’ve never talked to before. While this can be a good choice if you’ve smiled at each other or shared classes, you want your date to at least know your first name.

2. Ask the person if he has a date to the winter formal yet or have a friend ask him if you’re too nervous.

3. Lay the groundwork for your possible date. You can do this by talking to him about the upcoming dance and mentioning a few things you like or don’t like about dances. You can even slip in the fact that you don’t yet have a date and maybe he’ll end up doing the asking!

4. Practice what you’re going to say and even run through your lines with a guy friend. A male perspective can be great at times like this because he’ll know what a guy wants and likes.

5. Approach the guy you want to ask when he’s alone and has a few minutes to spare. Talking to him when he’s in a hurry or distracted by friends can be uncomfortable. Take a deep breath and ask him to be your date to the winter formal.

• Don’t expect an answer right away. He may need some time to think things through and decide.

• Ask in a quiet place with just the two of you and not with a group of friends around. He may feel pressured if he thinks the other people expect him to answer in one specific way.
