Most people know that doing aerobics is an excellent way to condition the body, maintain a healthy heart and lose weight. Unfortunately, many people become bored soon after starting a regular aerobics program and abandon it completely. For these people, doing water aerobics can be a good alternative. A water aerobics program is easy on joints and muscles, gets the heart rate up and burns calories which results in weight loss. Water exercise is an ideal choice not only for healthy people but also for those who have a condition such as arthritis or a back injury that might prohibit them from doing regular exercises. And because water aerobics is usually done in chest-high water, you don't have to be a swimmer to participate.

From Quick Guide: Water Works: Water Aerobics
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Access to a swimming pool
  1. Step 1

Join a water aerobics class, if possible, to learn how to do the exercises properly. An instructor usually guides the class through the exercises and will help make sure that you understand how to do the exercises correctly.

  2. Step 2

Perform the exercise on your own, if you prefer, after you have learned how to do them correctly. The water aerobics exercises are easy to learn and fun to do. Although many people enjoy the atmosphere of a group or class, if that isn't always practical or convenient for you just do the workout alone when it fits your schedule.

  3. Step 3

Do water aerobics just like you would do regular aerobics, only do the workout in water. Your workout can include walking, running and other aerobic activities that will be just as effective as a land workout but much easier on the body.

  4. Step 4

Tone, strengthen and exercise every part of your body by doing your workout in the water. The resistance of water is 12 times that of air, so moving through the water exerts much more force and causes you to use your muscles more. This will, in turn, help to make you stronger.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do water aerobics in combination with a sensible, well-balanced diet for best weight loss results.
