If you are looking to design a house you intend to build, you should consider who is going to be responsible for the building process. If you intend to work with a home builder, look at his website or talk to him. Many have programs you can use to design floorplans for your new home. If not, talk to your architect or contractor to discuss what plans she can build from. There are plenty of house design software programs available, but if you cannot find someone who can build off of the plan it produces, it will be virtually worthless.

If you want to design a house for fun, you have some excellent options. Professional software programs and websites can be fun tools to play around with. Additionally, you can design a house (both inside and out) using the computer game The Sims or the Internet-based Second Life. Both will cost you, but the Sims in particular offers very easy-to-use tools. Additionally, there are a number of free programs online, including Architect Studio 3D, which allows you to walk through the house you designed (see link in Resources).
