Draw a Pointing Finger

Most artists complain about how difficult it is to draw a hand. But hands can be drawn easily as soon as the artist has memorized the structure of the hand. Even a difficult hand gesture like the pointing finger can be drawn when an artist correctly visualizes where the fingers are supposed to go. Then a pointing finger can be drawn at any angle and still look anatomically correct; here are a few pointers to get you started.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw two curving lines, one line curving upwards and one line curving downwards.

    • 2

Draw two more curving lines that touch the top and bottom curving lines. The left line should curve to the left and the right line should curve to the right. These four curving lines will be the base of the hand.

    • 3

Draw two overlapping circles, one on top of the other, right next to the top-right part of the base of the hand.

    • 4

Start on the left of the bottom circle and draw a line that slants downward and to the left. Then have the line sharply change direction, slanting downward and to the right. Once the line is almost beneath the base of the hand, have the line travel almost horizontally to the right, curving up slightly. Once the line has traveled about half of the length of the hand, curve the line upwards and come around to the left to form the thumb.

    • 5

Start forming the fingers. Make sure that the fingers are the about the same size. Draw three vertical lines within the base of the hand and round out the tops and bottoms of the fingers.

    • 6

Now that you have drawn out the basic shape of the hand, you can erase the guidelines and alter the lines to create a hand of your choosing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Definitely use layers whenever you plan to draw lines that overlap each other.
