How to Apply to a Master of Public Health Program

Applying to graduate school for a public health degree can be daunting. You must stay organized in order to meet the various deadlines and to submit all the required information. Fortunately, many resources are available to help you navigate through the process. Before you apply, define your goals and expectations and use these to guide your degree and school selection.

  1. Step 1

    Decide which schools to apply to. The Association of Schools of Public Health is a good resource to begin learning about the different schools. The ASPH will tell you which schools are accredited and what degree programs each offers.

  2. Step 2

    Decide what specialization you want to pursue. Most schools offer epidemiology, biostatistics, health services administration, health promotion/education and environmental health sciences. If you have a more specific interest, such as maternal health or gerentology, you may want to do more research to see if a particular school has a strong focus in that area.

  3. Step 3

    After you have narrowed your list of potential schools, visit their websites to learn more about their programs. You should also contact the school's public health department and request information. They will likely send fact sheets and copies of recently published articles or studies.

  4. Step 4

    Ask the school to provide a student, alumni, and/or faculty contact who would be willing to answer additional questions. They can answer more specific questions about class size, internship opportunities and campus life.

  5. Step 5

    After you have identified the schools you will apply to, create a calendar or spreadsheet to track the application deadlines. Each school has a different application process and different requirements. However, all schools require official transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal essays.

Tips & Warnings
  • Identify people to write letters of recommendation early in the process. It is rude to ask someone to write a letter on your behalf and then demand that she complete it in a day or two.
  • Call the university and ask questions whenever you need clarification. The instructions can be confusing and it is the job of the applications office staff to assist with the process.
