Here's how to wax and detail a car, for that 'fresh off the lot' look. Waxing should be done 2-4 times per year(depending on your climate).

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a CLEAN car
  • car wax
  • microfiber towels
  • wax applicators
  • plastic & vinyl trim protectant
  • tire shine (spray)

    Here's what waxing does

ALWAYS start with a cool clean car, parked in the shade. If you don't then your wax is a waste of time! So get your car to the car wash, dry it off, let the body panels cool off, and then we'll start!

  2. Step 2
    Get all of it!

    Get all of it!

With a clean, dry, cool car(in the shade), start by applying wax over a selected area (ex: hood), work the wax in a circular motion until you have covered every inch of the surface. Really take your time and look at the paint from every angle. If you can still see shiny clearcoat paint anywhere, then go over that area with wax on the applicator once more.

  3. Step 3

Allow the wax to 'haze' into a thick white composition. (this usually takes anywhere from 2-3 minutes, and will allow you to continue to the next step.

  4. Step 4

While you wait, go ahead and move onto another body panel, and repeat step 2, until you have covered the whole car with wax.

  5. Step 5
    wax on, wax off!

    wax on, wax off!

After you have "Waxed ON", now it's time to "Wax OFF"...This is often harder and more time consuming than it looks, but is well worth the effort! To remove the wax from your paint, use several clean microfiber towels in a reverse cirular motion to remove all of the white residue. You will notice that your towels are removing dirt as well, and so it is important to always use a clean side of the towel for wax removal to avoid any damage to the clearcoat from dirt particles.

  6. Step 6

After you have the wax removed, give your car a good look through, and if you see any white residue, be sure to wipe it off.

  7. Step 7

Now that the wax is off, move on to any plastic, vinyl, or rubber trim.
You will need to apply a product such as 'armor all wipes' to protect these pieces from any stray wax and UV rays.

  8. Step 8

After your trim pieces are done, move onto the tires. Give them a nice tire treatment such as armor all or black magic tire shine. Many of these tire products are availible in spray form, and don't use that much product for each tire (a little goes a long way).

  9. Step 9
    It's worth it!

Walk around your car and make sure it looks damn good! It should, and you will too when you're cruising by everyone and they can see themselves in your mirror-like clear coat!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wax your car in the shade, and make sure the body panels are 'cool to the touch.'
  • It is easy for a beginner to miss a body panel while waxing...To avoid this, I suggest to finish applying the wax on the entire surface of your vehicle BEFORE removing it from any of the body panels.
  • Avoid getting wax on your car's plastic, rubber, and vinyl trim....This causes these pieces to become oxidized over the years, and start to fade.
  • Wax tends to build up at the edges of the body panel, and should be removed...if you have it around the hood, then open the hood, and wipe the edges clean. Repeat this for doors, gas tank hatch, around bumpers(if painted) etc.
  • Always follow the instructions on whatever product you decide to buy for best results.
