How to Save on Gas While Cruising

Higher gas prices has driven more car owners to search for improving fuel mileage but these simple tips could be of great help.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove excess unuseable baggage or weight on the trunk or the roof rack.

  2. Step 2

Use light pressure on the accelerator, particularly on automatic transmission.

  3. Step 3

Avoid hard acceleration and get into top gear as soon as possible, but do not push the engine too hard - this wastes fuel.

  4. Step 4

Do not drive too close to the vehicle in front. This may mean heavy breaking and more fuel gobbling acceleration.

  5. Step 5

Anticipate road conditions so that you can avoid braking and keep in top gear as much as possible.

  6. Step 6

    Keep a steady cruising speed.

  7. Step 7

Don't believe you can save fuel by switching off the engine while stopped in a traffic queue. Unless you've stopped for a long time, you'll waste more than you save when you restart the engine worst you'll get stalled.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use a higher grade of fuel than necessary. It is a waste of money.
  • Don't use a lower grade unless recommended. You could damage the engine.
  • Don't use a thinner grade of oil than that recommended. It could cause excessive friction and increase fuel consumption.
  • Don't use smaller carburetor jets than those recommended. You would have to make other adjustments to make it worthwhile and trouble-free.
