- ohm meter,wire strippers,wire nuts,screwdrivers,electric detecting device such as a wiggie

When diagnosing any problem you will first need to isolate the problem.
you can do this by either removing the item or disconnecting it from everything else. -

Start by disconnecting the item that is at fault if it is an appliance most times you will find the cord is the fault. If it is a stove sometimes the element in the oven is bad.

After you have isolated the source examine it for burnt or frayed wires or any wire that has touched metal.

Visually check all connections,wires, wire nuts, check the ground wire is it touching the white or black wire.

Make sure no one has crossed the white and black wire on an outlet, both sides of an outlet should be the same color.

Check all lighting to see if the socket on the fixture is loose
