Things You'll Need:
- Internet Connection
- Microsoft Windows
-
Step 1
This works for most internet connections that may be slow because of high activity.
First, click your "Start" button.
Then, click "Run".
This will open a window with a text box.
You will need to type "cmd.exe" into the text box without the quotes. -
Step 2
This will open the command prompt window similar to MS DOS.
Now, you will need to type "ipconfig/release" without the quotes.
Then press enter on your keyboard.
You will probably get a tooltip popup in your taskbar that says something like "Network cable unplugged", or something similar. It is ok, the command you just typed in, simply disabled your internet connection. -
Step 3
Now, to turn it back on...
Type "ipconfig/renew" and press enter on your keyboard.
Your internet connection should resume. Next, type "ipconfig/flushdns".
This will empty the dns cache.
You can now close the command window.
Your connection speed should improve slightly, and web pages should load a bit more quickly. Doing this before playing an online multiplayer game will improve game performance.
Another way to improve your speed when web surfing, is to clear your browsing history. As long as you have your favorite websites bookmarked, there will not be any problems. In Mozilla Firefox, you simply click "Tools" in your taskbar, then "clear private data". Then select the options that you wish to clear. Deleting cookies frees up a small amount of memory on your hard drive as well. In Internet Explorer 7, you will click "Tools" then "Delete browsing history".
If your internet connection remains sluggish, you may have to contact your internet service provider, or speak with the person who set up your internet connection.
