Since printer cartridges for the HP DeskJet 1180C printer (the HP 45 cartridges) cost between $30 and $40 on average (depending on where you purchase them), refilling these cartridges can help you save money in the long run. The key is learning how to correctly refill the cartridge. This article will describe the process for refilling the ink cartridge for the HP DeskJet 1180C printer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ink refill kit compatible with the HP DeskJet 1180c printer
  • Gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Newspaper
  1. Step 1

Place paper towels or an old newspaper on your work surface. Next, remove the disposable gloves that came with the ink refill kit. Place a glove on each hand. This will help to prevent ink from staining your hands during the refill and cleanup process.

  2. Step 2

Turn over the ink cartridge and remove the plug or black tape covering the refill hole. This is located on the bottom of the ink cartridge. Once it is removed, you should see a ball bearing covering the refill hole. Take the end of the syringe (without the needle), insert it into the refill hole and gently push the ball bearing into the cartridge.

  3. Step 3

Assemble the syringe. Take the needle that came in the ink refill kit and connect it firmly to the small opening on top of the syringe. Remove the cap from the black and press the syringe into the ink, pulling the plunger back to draw ink into the syringe. Fill the plunger 1/2 to 3/4 of the way.

  4. Step 4

Inject ink into the refill hole. Be careful not to puncture the ink bag in the cartridge. If it is damaged, you will need to purchase a new cartridge. Continue filling until bubbles appear at the fill hole.

  5. Step 5

Remove the syringe and pick up a plug that came with the kit. Squeeze the sides of the cartridge gently and insert the plug while squeezing. This creates pressure inside the cartridge that prevents it from leaking

  6. Step 6

Wipe excess ink off the cartridge. Turn upright and allow to sit for 1 to 2 minutes. If no leaking has occurred, replace the cartridge in the printer and print a test page. You may need to print one to two pages before the cartridge prints properly. If the cartridge is leaking, you may need to remove the plug and repeat Step 5.
