How to Install a Wood Exterior Door Jam

Things You'll Need
- Wood exterior door jamb
- Drill
- Hammer
- 8d finish nails
- Nail set
- Level
- Door shims

Pre drill holes into the jamb. Cut the head off one of the 8d finish nails and use it as a drill bit. Drill three or four holes on both vertical sides of the jamb. Set the jamb into the opening and center it.

Place several shims between the jamb and the studs, as needed to hold the jamb in place. Drive a nail in one spot to hold the jamb in place.

Set the level on the inside of the jamb to plumb it. Secure the jamb on the plumbed side. Repeat across the top of the jamb.

Secure the rest of the jamb to the opening with shims and nails. Set all nails and fill holes with wood putty. Finish the jamb as needed.

Tips & Warnings
Always wear safety glasses.
Drive the nail close to the wood with the hammer and finish driving it with the nail set and hammer.
Use caution when plumbing and leveling as it will determine how well the door fits into the jamb.
