How to Play Cincinnati Community Poker

Cincinnati Poker is one of the predecessors to the game we now know as Texas Hold'em. The game of Cincinnati Poker has more possibilities of large hands though, as players make their best five card hand from a total of nine cards. This means there is typically more betting in a game of Cincinnati Poker than there is in a game of Texas Hold'em. Due to the larger number of hole cards though, fewer players can play Cincinnati Poker at a single table.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize your home poker night with a group of friends. Cincinnati Poker is a game that can be played in rotation with many other types of home poker variations. The maximum number of players in a game of Cincinnati Poker is ten. The ideal number is six to eight players.

    • 2

Ante and deal. Instruct each player to ante into the pot the minimum betting chip at your table. Then deal five facedown cards to each player at the table. After all the players have received their cards, each player may look at his own facedown cards.

    • 3

Deal five facedown cards in the center of the table. Instruct the players that they can use any combination of their own five hole cards and the five community cards in the middle of the table to form their best five-card poker hand.

    • 4

Flip one of the community cards in the center of the table and then conduct a betting round. The player to the left of the dealer begins the begging round.

    • 5

Flip the second community card over and conduct a second betting round. This time the player two seats to the left of the dealer begins the wagering.

    • 6

Flip over the remaining three community cards one at a time, with a wagering round conducted after each card is flipped over. The player that starts the wagering rotates clockwise around the table from round to round.

    • 7

Reveal your cards and declare your hand. After the fifth wagering round, all players that have not folded reveal their cards and declare their hand. The player with the best poker hand wins the pot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cincinnati Community Poker tends to have larger pots than Texas Hold'em. This is because there is an additional wagering round in Cincinnati Community Poker, and players have more cards to use to form their best five-card poker hand.

  • Be cautious betting on full house and straight flush possibilities, which are typically not strong enough to win in Cincinnati Community Poker. This is because unlike other community poker games, each player has five hole cards and five community cards to make their best hand. This increases the likelihood of producing hands that are a full house or higher ranking hand.
