Making homemade root beer following these time tested steps, can be accomplished in just a little over an hour, using just a few simple ingredients. This recipe will yield 4 gallons of root beer (about 64 servings) and is sure to be a crowd pleasing ingredient in any party or gathering.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large insulated drink cooler
  • 6 cups white sugar
  • 3 1/3 gallons cold water
  • 2 oz root beer extract
  • 4 lbs dry ice
  • Heavy plastic gloves for handling the dry ice
  • Large metal spoon, or other stirring utensil
  1. Step 1

Mix together the sugar and water, pouring both into the insulated cooler. Stir until the mixture dissolves completely.

  2. Step 2

Blend in the root beer extract, stirring well.

  3. Step 3

Put on the plastic gloves before carefully adding the dry ice to the cooler.

  4. Step 4

Cover loosely, but do not seal. Air pressure can build up inside the cooler, causing it to explode.

  5. Step 5

Allow mixture to stand at room temperature for about an hour, before serving.

  6. Step 6

Store leftover root beer in gallon jugs, in a cool, dry place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dry ice should always be handled with gloves
  • In order to avoid accidents or injuries, be sure that air can escape the cooler, after adding the dry ice.
