Coaching high school football can be a challenging, but rewarding, career.

Sports play a large role in high school, and football is one of the most popular sports. Coaching the team can be personally rewarding because of the relationship with the players. It also can be challenging because of the emphasis on competition, especially in upper grades. A coach must like helping players achieve physical and personal growth.

      Acquire training in football as early as possible. In addition to being a player, volunteer to help coach the younger teams. Learn as much as you can from other professional or volunteer coaches.

      Decide if you want to go into education or become a coach as a non-teacher.

      Network with others in the profession, and become a member of your state athletic association and coach's association. Go to coaching clinics and talk with regional and national coaches.

      Respond to available coaching positions even before graduation. Go to related job fairs and circulate your resume as much as possible. Do not be averse to accepting junior or assistant positions.
