Get appointed with insurance carriers. If you are planning to work as an independent insurance producer, you must get properly licensed and appointed with every insurance company whose products you intend to sell. This is typically a simple application process and the issuance of an agent identification number.

Purchase a laptop computer. A great deal of insurance is sold in the customer's home, and a laptop is often one of the most powerful selling tools a broker can own. Purchase a reliable and respectable vehicle. Since insurance sales usually require a visit to the home of a prospective customer, you may be traveling quite extensively. Having a reliable vehicle is essential for success, and having one that is relatively new and respectable looking can go a long way to creating a positive first impression.

Submit completed applications. After your visits to prospects result in successfully completed application documents, these must be delivered to the insurance carriers for processing and evaluation. Depending on the type of insurance policies you sell, and the carriers with whom you work, you may be permitted to simply fax in copies of the application paperwork, or overnight-mail completed forms.
