Step 1
Determine where you will live. In Hawaii, communities are small and often closely-knit, but real estate agents can help you find just the right location, whether commercial or residential. Use these services long distance to narrow down your search, and then make your final purchase of a place to move by visiting (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Start a business in Hawaii only after getting approval to do so. To accomplish this, visit the local city hall to request a business permit. Meet all requirements and code qualifications at the location of the business prior to opening your doors. Most areas are flexible and willing to provide you with the help you need to get established.
-
Step 3
Consider expenses and lifestyle choices. The cost of living in Hawaii is higher than in most other states, but comparable to California or New York. Also, you will find that Hawaii is a much more active and outdoor community, with a heavy tourism industry, which may mean a different lifestyle than you are currently used to.
-
Step 4
Think about employment before you work. While many areas of Hawaii offer jobs regularly, they can be hard to get. The largest industry on most of the Hawaiian Islands is the service and tourism industry. Minimum wage jobs are common, with upper management positions being harder to obtain.
-
Step 5
Transport your belonging by ship or aircraft. If possible, plan to buy what you can in Hawaii instead, as it may be less expensive in the long run (see Resources below).

on 8/11/2008 Good article by the way. I often get questioned about how I can afford to live in Hawaii. I always tell people that I am from California...I'm used to high prices.

on 8/11/2008 You can transport a lot of belongings, even filled suitcases, via USPS Parcel Post. It is very cheap, can be insured, and arrives within 8 days to three weeks.
