How to Sell a Wedding Set

A broken marriage often means you are left with a wedding set. If you don't want to keep the jewelry, you can sell it and at least make a bit of money to help ease your heartache. Learn how to sell your wedding set in a few simple steps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Have your wedding set appraised by a reputable appraiser. Ask your jeweler for a recommendation or visit the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers for a list of jewelers near you. The appraiser should take photographs of your wedding set and give you a written estimate its value based on its weight and the cut and clarity of the stones. If you are not happy with your first appraisal, feel free to visit another jeweler for a second opinion.

Ask your friends and acquaintances if they are in the market for a wedding set. Be prepared to show the potential buyer the actual set as well as documentation such as the original paperwork and appraisal. You are more likely to make more money from a personal sale than a transaction with a stranger.

List your wedding set on an online auction site (see Resources). Include photographs, a detailed description of the set and appraisal information. Expect to sell the wedding set for approximately 40 to 50 percent of its original value. You can also advertise in your local newspaper.

Consider selling the diamond separately. If your wedding set has not sold after several weeks of advertising, consider selling your diamond to a reputable dealer. You can find one by searching the Diamond Manufacturers and Importers Association of America or asking your personal jeweler for a recommendation. Be prepared to present the diamond's original paperwork as well as subsequent appraisal information. Get two to three estimates before selling your diamond.

Sell the metal and any ancillary jewels. If you sell your diamond separately, you will be left with what is known in the industry as scrap. Many jewelers and pawn shops accept scrap, so visit a few reputable ones and get estimates before selling the remainder of your wedding set.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try selling your wedding set around the December holidays or before Valentine's Day, when many couples get engaged.

  • Never part with your wedding set before receiving full payment from the buyer.

  • Take someone with you if you show the set in person. Meet in a well-lit, safe and public place. Leave if you feel uncomfortable or suspicious.
