A high school diploma may mean having a job or not. For those who are unable to attend public schools, or are unwilling to, getting a high school diploma from home is a very real possibility. Often called distance learning, you can earn your degree without leaving your home in most states. Plus you can learn at your own pace and explore the topics that you enjoy the most. Those under 18 will need parent approval to do so.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get tested for your current education level. These tests are available through any of the online schools that offer high school education and diplomas. They give you a good indication of the subjects you need to take and the amount of learning you'll need to accomplish.

  2. Step 2

Enroll in the right school to get your high school diploma. Many online schools offer these programs, and some local community organizations offer at-home programs, too. Enroll in the one giving you the most thorough education with the best type of learning for you. This may involve intense studies, more laid-back education or hands-on learning.

  3. Step 3

Choose the courses that you need to complete your high school diploma. Basic educational goals including mathematics, English, science and social science are required in most cases. Elective courses are offered as well, to help you get the number of credits you need to graduate.

  4. Step 4

Study and work online to earn those credits by following the curriculum provided. Most at-home and online high school diploma courses provide online access to seminars, workshops, lectures and instructions that you follow along with in your book, completing homework that is checked by either your parent or the online school itself (depending on the type of program you enroll into).

  5. Step 5

Complete the required goals through the school. Testing may be done online or through print tests at local schools. Meet the requirements for all courses you take, and at the end of the process, you will have earned your high school diploma.
