There are two types of tree swings that are popular in back yards everywhere. One is the tire swing. The other is the wooden seat swing. Both are simple to make and hang on a strong branch in your yard.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old tire (the larger the diameter the better)
  • Heavy rope
  • 2” by 6” by 18” lumber, sanded smooth with no rough edges
  • 1-inch hole saw and drill
  • Chain (optional)
  • Sturdy tree branch
  • Tape measure
  • Ladder

    For a Tire Swing

  1. Step 1

Choose a strong tree branch at least 6 to 8 feet above the ground. Remove any branches below that could be an obstacle for the swing.

  2. Step 2

Measure from the top of the branch to the distance above ground that you want the top of the swing to be. The larger the tire, the higher it will need to sit above ground.

  3. Step 3

Lay the rope out at least two and a half times longer than you will need it be from the branch to the swing. Cut the rope at this length.

  4. Step 4

Fold the rope in half, bringing the ends even and leaving a loop at one end. Place the tire over the looped end.

  5. Step 5

Bring the ends of the rope through the loop pulling until the tire is tight against the rope.

  6. Step 6

Tie the ends of the rope over the tree branch and adjust the height as desired. After adjusting, secure the swing in place with a series of tight knots.

  7. For the Wooden Swing

  8. Step 1

Drill two 1-inch holes at least 2 inches from each side of the board. Each end of the board should have two holes.

  9. Step 2

Measure the distance from the top of the tree branch to the desired height of the swing. Cut two ropes three times longer than that measure.

  10. Step 3

Thread one end of the rope though one of the holes on the end of the board and then back up though the other hole on the same side. Pull the rope until both ends are even. Repeat this with the opposite end of the board.

  11. Step 4

Tie each rope securely over the tree branch taking care to keep the swing below level.

Tips & Warnings
  • Heavy chain can be used instead of rope for either of the swings. Just be sure to secure the ends of the chain with heavy duty cable locks or hooks.
