Step 1
Make a list of the make and model of outboard motors you are interested in owning. Some popular motor brand names include Mercury, Johnson, Yamaha, Evenrude and Tohatsu.
-
Step 2
Make another list of the condition of the motor you prefer so you can make specific and comparable price comparisons. Some choices include new, rebuilt, used and salvaged. Check your local newspapers for sales. Look under "recreation," "boating," "motors," "engines" and "sports" in the classified section.
-
Step 3
Search online for dealers of new or used motors. Most of the marine retail dealers sell new outboard motors, but some will have separate listings for used and rebuilt engines. Also check online sellers like eBay and Craigslist for dealer or personal sales ads. Craigslist will allow you to click on any state and city to check ads for boats and boat motors. Use boating message boards to ask questions about finding a motor (see Resources below).
-
Step 4
Go to marine dealerships in person to check out the inventory of new or pre-owned outboard motors. Find out if they will match prices with their competitors or throw in some other perks.
-
Step 5
Go to marine salvage yards to check on rebuilt or used motors. Sometimes the owners of these "boat graveyards" will pull good parts from several different motors to build a new/used motor.
