One of Sonic the Hedgehog's friends and allies is Knuckles the Echidna, nicknamed "Knux." He is famous for the spike-studded knuckles on his gloves, which he uses with great skill and power to defeat his adversaries. His popularity is due to his tough but upbeat attitude, and he is a spunky and clever strategist in battles. Here is a step-by-step tutorial for fans that want to capture his image in a drawing or colored artwork.

Instructions

    • 1
      Oval for the head

Start by sketching in a slightly flattened oval for the head as pictured here. Sketch the lines lightly; they are just a guide to rough in the basic shapes and proportions. Later we will define the drawing with firm, solid lines.

    • 2
      Guidelines for the face

Sketch in the shapes for the eyes, lower face and nose. The nose will come to a point as shown in this example. The eye is a slanted, pointed oval shape. Sketch the guidelines in lightly.

      Add body guidelines

Add a shape for the body. The form is a bit like a triangle with very rounded corners. Try to sketch it in the same size and position as in this example.

    • 4
      Guidelines for arms and legs

Add lightly sketched lines as shown for the arms and legs. One arm is partially hidden behind the body. Sketch in the shapes for his large hands and feet as shown here. Up to this point, we are setting the basic forms and proportions, then we will draw around them and fill in the details.

      Drawing in final forms

Start drawing in more solid lines using the lightly sketched shapes and lines as a framework for the more detailed drawing. Use the eraser to eliminate guidelines that you no longer need. Study the shapes in the drawing here and copy them as closely as possible. ( A technique used by many cartoon artists is to make the final drawing with ink, erasing away the pencil lines entirely. You may consider the inking option when you are confident with your drawing skills.)

      Finished Knux

Lay in the colors, starting from the edge-lines inward. By letting a little of the white of the paper show through towards the center, or using a brighter shade of your color in the middle of the forms, you can add roundness and dimension to your drawing. Shadowed areas can be colored with a darker shade of your basic color for each shape. Look for the small details that add life to a drawing, like the speck of white highlight in the eye, or the curve of Knux's impish grin. Enjoy the process and when you finish, congratulate yourself on a job well done.
