Spironolactone (or Aldactone) is a diuretic (water pill) used to lessen fluid in the body. It helps treat high blood pressure and edema. Though it has not been approved by the FDA for animal use, it is still commonly prescribed by veterinarians for dogs and cats.

It is important when using this medication on a cat to give it only as directed by your vet. After a consultation with you about all of your cat’s current medical conditions, medication use, and past medical history, your vet can prescribe the proper amount of Spironolactone to give to your pet. The usual dosage for animals is 0.5-1mg per pound, twice a day. It is important to continue giving the medication to your pet until the prescription is gone, unless otherwise directed by vet. If your cat begins to act like it is feeling better before the prescription runs out and you stop giving it to them, the cat might relapse.

Like many medications, it is best to give the Spironolactone with food as it may cause nausea on an empty stomach. Because of the nature of water pills, it is also necessary to keep water available for your cat at all times. Most cats do not voluntarily swallow pills when you want them to, so you may need to wrap the medication in a small piece of food in order to get the animal to take it. If the cat spits it out, you will need to try again until you are sure the pet has ingested it.

Side effects may occur with use of this medication, including tiredness, confusion, lack of urination, and shortness of breath. Keep your vet informed of any side effects the cat experiences, but do not stop giving the medication unless you are instructed to do so. Pay close attention to how the cat is behaving, whether not it is eating properly, and how often it uses the litter box. If any of its normal daily behaviors change, contact your vet immediately to report there might be a problem.
