Consecutive Guts Poker is a home version of Guts Poker that rewards players for having two consecutive cards in a hand. As in most versions of Guts poker there are no such hands as straights and flushes. This means that the "three of a kind" hand is the best you can have in Consecutive Guts Poker. If you have three Aces, you will be a winner in this game. Of course, the penalty for playing a hand and losing can be substantial as the pot grows.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Gather your friends together for an evening of poker. When you are planning on playing Consecutive Guts Poker, you should limit the choice of games to Guts games only. This is because the pot will grow until only one person decides to play the hand. Playing variations of poker other than Guts Poker variations would keep the pot sizes very small. For the first hand of the night have each player pay an ante into the pot.

  2. Step 2

Deal five facedown cards to each player. After players have received all five cards, they may look at their own cards.

  3. Step 3

Instruct players that if they have two cards that are consecutive cards (such as the 2 and 3, or the 7 and 8), they may combine them into one wild card to be used with the other two cards in their hand. In Consecutive Guts Poker you form your best three-card poker hand. The ranking of the hands are three of a kind, high pair, and high card.

  4. Step 4

Direct each player to put his fist over the table. Tell players that if they want to play their hand, they should place a chip in their closed hand. After each player has put his closed hand over the table, all players should open their fists. Only the players with chips in their hands are in that hand.

  5. Step 5

Reveal your cards. All players that had a chip in their hand now reveal their hand and declare what they have as their best three-card hand. The player with the best hand wins the pot.

  6. Step 6

Force those who played the hand and lost to pay a penalty into the new pot. This is how the new pot is built, because players do not ante each time. The penalty for the players who lost the hand is equal to the pot at the start of the hand they just lost.

  7. Step 7

Collect the cards, shuffle, and repeat Steps 2 through 6. These steps are repeated until the last hand of the evening, or until only one person has a chip in his closed fist when players open their fists.

Tips & Warnings
  • If only one person has a chip in his closed fist, also known as “gutting,” the players wins the pot and everyone antes again and another round of Consecutive Guts Poker begins.
  • As in all Guts Poker variations you must play a tighter version of the game as the pot gets bigger. Matching the pot early on is relatively cheap, but if the game goes four or five rounds with multiple players losing, the pot can reach double-digit totals.
