Road bike fit is essential to performance and an enjoyable ride. Beyond purchasing the correct size frame and components, correct adjustment and fine tuning to your body will increase your bike's performance capability and give you a more comfortable time in the saddle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bike tool or Allen wrench set
  • Stationary trainer
  1. Step 1

In your usual cycling clothing, mount the bike and pedal for a few minutes to get into your natural riding position.

  2. Step 2

Stop pedaling and bring the crank arms into a vertical position. Unclip from the lower pedal and place your heel on the pedal surface. Be sure to keep the crank in the same position.

  3. Step 3

Check your knee angle. In this position, your leg should be straight.

  4. Step 4

If your knee is bent or you have trouble reaching the pedal with your heel, get off the bike and raise or lower the seat accordingly. Use small increments.

  5. Step 5

Recheck seat height using the method in Steps 1-3. If needed, make further adjustments.

  6. Step 6

Mount your bike again and have a friend look on from the side. At the lowest part of the pedal stroke, your knee should have about a 30-degree angle. If it does not, recheck the seat height and make further adjustments.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have a stationary trainer, use a wall to keep yourself upright and pedal backwards instead.
  • You can also use a camera to check your knee angle in Step 6.
