1
Buy a local paper that has a "Bands looking for Members" section. There will be listings for many openings, ranging from singers to instrumentalists. Find the ones that are relevant to the instrument you play. Some are going to be very advanced bands that are pursuing contracts and constant gigs. Others will be jam bands that get together for fun. You will need to decide where your intentions lie.

2
Find out when they are having auditions. Many will require a demo tape sent to them first so that they know what your talent level is and if you will fit in with the existing members of the band. Have some samples ready to send.

Practice the style of the band you want to audition for. Go to a band gig before your audition to see what it is they do and just how they do it. Get a song list together of songs they play that you are comfortable playing. When the day comes and your audition is up, play like you belong there. They will be looking for both creativity and discipline. They want someone who is going to have fun but also complement the other members.

Search online sources. One of the best places to look is on Craigslist, where many bands post ads for instrumentalists (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
Be sure your skill level is what the band is looking for. Your idea of what your skill level may not be what others perceive. Have an objective listener check your skill level in an honest manner.
Offer to split studio time for the audition. It will show that you are cognizant of the costs of being a musician.
